2014 UCI Road World Championship to Ponferrada, Spain

The International Cycling Union (UCI) confirmed that the 2014 Road World Championships will be hosted by Spanish city, Ponferrada, bringing an end to a concern that the hosting bid was close to collapse due to Spain’s economic problems.

Spain has won again the bid to host the annual world championships for bicycle and road racing organised by the International Cycling Union. The news came as relief to organisers after the UCI had threatened to withdraw its support for Spain’s hosting bid unless some contractual agreement were met.

Before Ponferrada was selected to host the event, they were given 30 days to meet several contractual commitments.

“I am delighted to confirm that the Ponferrada organisers have responded quickly and efficiently to our request, providing us with the financial and organisational guarantees that we required,” says Pat McQuaid, UCI president.

McQuaid confidently added that they are looking forward to the success of the 2014 UCI World Road Championships since it will take place in one of their traditional cycling nations.

However, the UCI made it clear that the hosting confirmation given to Spain is still “on the condition that remaining guarantees are forthcoming.”

It has been nine years since Spain hosted the event in 2005 in its capital Madrid, and the race in Ponferrada this coming 2014 will surely prove to be more entertaining and challenging given the city’s mountainous terrain.

Next year’s World Road Championships will be hosted by Florence, Italy.
