Apple’s both first generation iPad and iPad 2 were designed with 9.7-inch displays that has the capacity to display contents with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixel. While the rumour of the release of a 7-inch iPad is making the rounds in the market, at the same it is one that have been rejected in the past by many analysts and tech pundits. The co-founder and long time CEO of Apple, the late Steve Jobs had also shot down the idea of a 7-inch iPad. Jobs rejected it stating that size, “the screen is too small to express the software.”
However, analyst Gottheil told Computerworld that he thinks that the electronic giant Apple is planning to introduce a 7-inch variation of its next iPad in to market. He also stated that a case that incorporates a keyboard as an accessory too would be shipped along with the smaller iPad.
In the report, Gottheil told, “I believe that’s always been in the plan,” He further said, “Actually, that’s a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank.”
In the market, speculations are being made that Apple is looking forward to manufacture a 7-inch tablet due to the escalating competition from different tablets both bigger and smaller manufactured by different mobile brands. Till date, the 7-inch tablets have failed to attract the attention of the consumers in the market, mentioned the Amazon Kindle Fire. Amazon states that though the specific sales numbers have not been disclosed yet it is known that the Fire has sold in the millions.
In a report last month, Apple mentioned that in the last three months of year 2011, a record number of iPads were sold; it is the same quarter in which Fire was launched by Amazon. The giant technology company Cupertino reported that 15.43 million iPads were sold by it in the fourth quarter of last year and it indicated that it was more than the 4 million sold in the third quarter.
Though, the massive sales record, yet the iPad is losing its market share to rival tablets running on Google’s Android operating system. The recent data from the Strategy Analytics, showed that the share of iPad’s in the tablet market fell to 57.6% in the fourth quarter of 2011. The research firm further stated that the iPad accounted for 68.2% of the global tablet market a year earlier.
